LET'S HEAR IT FOR 'UNCLE RON'
YEA! … BOO!! (Briefly told):
YEA! JMU … no, not because it’s moving up in the college
football world, leaving the Sun Belt Conference for the more-
competitive American Conference … but because the one-time
all-women’s institution is rapidly becoming the modern-day
Cradle of Coaches … Surely you’ve noticed what CURT
CIGNETTI has done at Indiana and what BOB CHESNEY
is doing in his first season at UCLA, both win-starved
programsprior to the arrival of the James Madison graduates …
Somewhere in the great beyond DR. RONALD CARRIER
smiling … for it was “Uncle Ron” as JMU president (1971-98)
who was most responsible for turning a small college in out-of-
the-way Harrisonburg, Va., into a major, well-known university
… by concentrating on athletics.
BOO! Triple-A golf … Even though it is second only to the
game’s major leagues and loaded with “stars of tomorrow,”
how in the world can anyone take seriously a tour named after a
management consulting firm based in Los Angeles … founded
in 1969 by LESTER KORN and JAMES M. FERRY. Thus
… the Korn Ferry Tour. Really? … Really… Originally named
after former golf great BEN HOGAN, it has had five title
changes in all since the first ball was struck February, 1990, in
Bakersfield, California ...That was the Korn Ferry, established
in 2019, which held its final, marque tournament of 2026 at the
Federal Club, on a course designed by ARNOLD PALMER.
BOO!! … to long list of critics who said JAYDEN DANIELS
never willlive down the major gaffe on the last play that cost
the Commanders an opportunity to beat the football Giants.
YEA! DREW BREES … who called out the NFL Washington
quarterback’s critics after he apparently forgot his team was out
of timeouts and ran with the ball instead of throwing it away …
and thereby kept DREW STEPHENS from attempting a very
makable 37 yard FG when time ran out before the Commanders
could get off another snap to spike the ball and stop the clock.
BOO! 27-27 … the final score, satisfying no one and leading to
the question: Why hasn’t the NFL kept up with the times and,
like long-time holdout NHL, figure a way to have a winner
every time?
YEA/BOO! – Virginia Polytechnic Institute/ Virginia’s
suddenly-lackluster Cavaliers. To think we were about to anoint
UVA a true challenger to Miami for the ACC title. Maybe
Clemson won’t want TONY ELLIOTT to replace likely-to-be
fired DABO SWINNEY after all.
Meanwhile, the Hokies’ KEVIN DUNKEMEYER has surged
]ahead of Virginia’s BEAU PRIBULA in the former PennState
teammates’ quest for ACC newcomer of the year.
YEA! ACC NETWORK’s WES DURHAM, son of North
Carolina’s late, legendary voice WOODY DURHAM, used to
be play-by-play for Georgia Tech football but you would be
hard-pressed to accuse him of prejudice while calling the
Ja ckets’ spirited but nevertheless disappointing 34-24 loss to
VaTech Oct. 17 in Blacksburg.
Until next time ...
