OF MANY THINGS: FROM McGARITY ON SHORT LIST TO KICKERS CONSISTENT

An unimaginable 60 games under .500, on the verge of setting all kinds of records for futility, the Chicago White Sox easily are the worst team in major league baseball this season … quite possibly any season. So tell us,  why  in the name of … Bill Veeck, who by now would have done something off the wall to generate interest … why is  AARON McGARITY  still down on the farm? … The slender 6-3, 185-pound right-hander has the kind of numbers (7-1 won-lost, 2.62 earned run average, opponent s’  composite batting average of .169) with the Chisox’ AAA affiliate in Charlotte, N.C., that should be enough for a call up by any MLB franchise, much less one so bad it doesn’t deserve  even  mention as a   laughingstock . Yet there  McGarity is …  to date, a career minor leaguer …  and, to his  credit, the Richmonder, who attended Mills Godwin High  and Virginia Tech before signing with the Yankees eight  years ago, continu...

TERZAGHI STARTS, SCORES ,,,, KICKERS WIN! KICKERS WIN! KICKERS WIN!

Three-times USL League One scoring champion and MVP  EMILIANO TERZAGHI  made his first start of the season  for the success-starved Richmond Kickers Wednesday night  (July 3). Guess what? They won 2-1 … Terzaghi scored the  first goal midway of the first half ...  CHANDLER  O’DWYER  the game-winner about as late as it gets … On  the next to last touch of the game, the 6-2 British import, 25,  turned a long free kick by  NILS VINYALS  into a perfect  header from five yards that enabled Richmond (W3-T3-L5)  to hand Forward Madison FC (5-4-1) its first USL League  One loss of the season … Just when it seemed the Kickers, in  what has been a disappointing if injury-plagued campaign,  would be denied victory despite a well-played, hopeful  exhibition that deserved better, it was O’Dwyer, who entered  as a reserve in the 76 th  minute, to the rescue. Richmond  moved to seventh place...

SOCCER, SOCCER ... NOTHING BUT SOCCER

Your offense-challenged Richmond Kickers got two first-half goals from  NIL VINYALS ... and still had to settle for a 2-2 standoff with homestanding Charlotte Saturday night in a USL Jagermeister Cup match … A foul just outside the 18-yard box in the 90 th  minute gave Vinyals opportunity for a hat trick and game-winning goal … but his ensuing shot for the upper left-hand corner barely missed, going wide and high … The game did not count in the regular-season standings ... unfortunately for the Kickers which went a perfect 5-for-5 in the ensuing shootout that gave them an extra point in Jagermeister group play ... The PK final was 5-4, the only miss by Charlotte’s  TRESOR MBUYU  in the second round. In his fifth season with the Independence and team leading scorer each of the last two, the 5-10 striker from the Republic of Congo got too much foot under the ball, sending it so high over the goal that Kickers’ keeper  PABLO PARA  simply stood and watch...
