COME ON, VIRGINIA TECH, HERE'S A GREAT COACH IN WAITING
A little on a LOT ...
Hey, Virginia Tech, here’s a suggestion for a football
coach to replace BRENT PRY (0-3, fired). I know, I
know it’s far out but how about Randolph-Macon’s
PEDRO ARRUZA … who really cares about his
players … and is a winner – unlike anyone since (or
actually before) FRANK BEAMER?
On second thought, never mind. He wouldn’t be
interested, would he?
The Hokies apparently are going all in to keep up with the
current big 3 of the ACC: Florida State, Miami and
Clemson. They hope to increase the athletic budget, now
said to be $144M, to $229M, with football and basketball
(men’s and women’s) biggest beneficiaries.
Plans include hiring a general manager for football.
BRUCE ARIANS, anyone?
Now, all Tech has to do is convince its big spenders to
spend even more … which may not be easy considering
athletes can come and go with such regularity that there is
no guarantee they will stick around long enough to get to
know them.
I know one high roller at another school who actually
rejected the opportunity to increase his donation to
football. What if that becomes a nation-wide epidemic?
*** “BERNIE! BERNIE! BERNIE!”
I can still hear the loving chant at the Spectrum for
goaltender BERNIE PARENT, who backstopped the
Philadelphia Flyers to back-to-back Stanley Cups (1974-
75) … when the Richmond Robins were their primary
farm team and provided such players as DAVE
SCHULTZ, BILL BARBER, DON SALESKI and
RICK MACLEISH to the NHL team’s glory years that
haven’t been duplicated since.
Parent died Saturday apparently of natural causes. He was
80 years old.
*** The Atlantic Coast Conference fined Syracuse
$25,000 and reprimanded the Orangemen for faking
injuries in the fourth quarter of their 34-21 victory over
17.5-point favorite Clemson Saturday. Tigers’ QB CALE
KLUBNIK accused SU of the same no-no after the
game.
*** After 11 years (244-123, six NCAA tournament
appearances), Auburn basketball coach BRUCE PEARL
announced his retirement Monday. One of college
athletics’ truly shady characters, he previously indicated
he might campaign for TOMMY TUBERVILLE’s U.S.
Senate seat which became available when Tuberville, a
former Auburn football coach, decided to run for
governor of Alabama in 2026. However, Pearl now says
he will serve as an ambassador for the school (whatever
that means).
Son Steve signed a five-year contract to replace him.
*** RORY McELROY doesn’t like BRYSON
DeCHAMBREAU … and doesn’t mind telling anyone
who asks, In other words, things could/will get ugly
during the Ryder Cup, scheduled to get under way Friday
at Bethpage.
“To get attention, he will mention me or
SCOTTIE[SCHEFFLER] or someone else … That’s
the only way he gets attention,” McElroy was quoted as
saying. “It might not involve me, but it’s inevitable
something will happen in New York.”
Yesterday, the crew on The Golf Channel speculated an
opening-round match, with McElroy and TOMMY
FLEETWOOD facing JUSTIN THOMAS and
DeChambreau.
“I’m not opposed to it from a from a game standpoint, but
I might be more opposed to it from a personality
standpoint,” said TGC’s JIM GALLAGHER JR.
Let the fireworks begin!
Until next time …
