LOTS OF SPORTS STUFF
Well, which is it? “COMMANDERS STAR RECEIVER
ENDS HOLDOUT“… or … “Terry McLaurin Goes on
PUP List as Negotiations Continue”
Those were the headlines, one over the other, on a piece
Sunday reporting the 29 year old Washington wideout
turned up at training camp after missing four days that
cost him $200,000 in fines. On the last year of a contract
that pays him about $22 million-plus annually, McLaurin
wants a long-term deal for a lot more money … although
neither he nor management have said exactly how much
or for how long … Or, for that matter, how far apart they
are.
A trade remains possible even though McLaurin insists he
wants to remain with the Commanders.
NOW IT APPEARS North Carolina/Chapel Hill is
checking the possibility of leaving the ACC for SEC.
Next? … UNC chancellor LEE ROBERTS reportedly
was involved in the conference settlement of suits
brought by Clemson and Florida State … that, among
other things beneficial to the Tigers and Seminoles (the
rich got richer), lowered exit fees from the current $165
million to $75M by 2030-31.
ANOTHER DEFINITION of “silly season” … The
Bayou Bengals of LSU say “Death Valley” belongs to
them, not Clemson. The football teams open the season
Aug. 30 at Clemson where coach DABO SWINNEY said
the name was coined in 1945 … more than a decade
before LSU began using it. So there!
NICE TIMING … by AEW’s classic villain MJF who, a
week or so before HULK HOGAN died, ripped him for
being “one of the worst actors of all time,” describing his
movies as “genuine garbage.”
SPEAKING OF “silly season” … STEPHEN CURRY,
who signed a one-year contract extension of $62.6M with
the Golden State Warriors for 2025-26, thinks NBA
players are “underpaid.” Yes, SIXTY TWO MILLION
DOLLARS (AND CHANGE).
YOUR RICHMOND Kickers have dropped three of their
last four starts, all by shutouts … but the one non-loss
was encouraging, nevertheless … a 1-1 standoff at home
against Spanish second-division Deportivo Leganes.
CHANDLER O’DWYER scored the Richmond goal in the 27th minute after a JOSH KIRKLANDheader
glanced off the post directly to O’Dwyer, standing alone
at the edge of the Leganes net … In a match that
produced few scoring opportunities, the visitors evened
the count about seven minutes later when Kickers’ keeper
JAMES SNEDDON muffed a long shot from outside
the box.
IF YOU WANT to see a truly inspirational documentary,
check out ESPN’s 30 for 30 series piece on BOOMER
ESIASON’s son GUNNAR and his (winning) battle
against cystic fibrosis.
By the way … bet you didn’t know Boomer played at
Maryland, University of, for Richmond’s BOBBY ROSS
… who has nothing but good things to say about his
former QB … who hasn’t always been the object of such
affection.
NBC APPARENTLY is planning to restore its all-sports
cable network, four years after removing NBCSN, which
gave us still-popular soccer-made-in-England ... and
REBECCA LOWE.
EPL also-ran Manchester United could sign keeper
GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA during the summer
transfer window. When last seen, he was riddled for three
first-half goals as favored Paris Saint-Germain was
embarrassed by EPL fourth-place Chelsea 3-0 in the Club
World Cup final July 13 in East Rutherford, N.J. …
Nevertheless, the 6-5 Donnarumma, 26, is considered at
the peak of his career … and would give struggling
United its first elite goalie since DAVID de GEA.
JOE GIBBS RACING Friday announced DENNY
HAMLIN had signed a two-year contract extension he
said “most likely” will be the last one of his career. The
Richmonder, 44, who attended Manchester High, has won
58 races on NASCAR’s major circuit, including four this
year.
THE WNBA all-star game drew 2.19 million viewers on
ABC, down 36 per cent from a year ago. CAITLIN
CLARK didn’t play (injured). Any other
questions?
Until next time ...
