OH, NO ... SAY IT ISN'T SO ...

Your Richmond Kickers haven’t won in their last

eight matches (0-4-4, all platforms) … after

dropping a 1-0 decision to North Carolina FC

Saturday night at City Stadium … A crowd of 4,753

saw former Duke standout ADAM LUCKHURST

score the only goal in the 81stminute, flicking a

header by goalkeeper PABLO JARA. The loss

pretty much eliminated the Kickers from having any

chance to win the Jagermeister Cup … They are 0-2,

with both losses coming to members of the USL

Championship (second division) League …

including 4-1 to Louisville April 26 here.

Member of USL League One, a third-division circuit,

Richmond currently is fifth (3-4-4, 13 points). The

Kickers went into the weekend’s play with a league-

leading 19 goals … while allowing a co-high 18 …

With 6 saves, Jara was named Man of the Match in

what was anything but a defensive struggle, as the

final score would seem to indicate.TREVOR

MULQUEEN, in goal for NCFC playing only his

second game of the season, also made some big

saves … Kickers’ next game: Saturday at home (7

p.m.) against 10th-place Texoma (2-2-5, 9 points) …

that has scored 9 goals and allowed 18 for a league-

worst -9 differential. Next in the 14-team USL

League One is last-place Union of Omaha with

minus 5.

** NASCAR caught AJ ALMINDINGER’s pit

crew doing something with his splitter and went off,

telling his crew chief to go to his room and … what

the heck is a splitter?

** So Mississippi State hired baseball coach deluxe

BRIAN O’CONNOR away from Virginia, the

University of. Wanna bet it had nothing to do with

UVA and everything to do with the Atlantic Coast

Conference?

** Hall of Fame-bound JUSTIN VERLANDER is

0-3 in 10 starts (4.33 ERA) for San Francisco in

what quite likely will be his final major-league

season. Now 42, the native of Goochland, winner of

three Cy Young awards, was signed to a one-year

$15 million contract by San Francisco … which

should have known better … Verlander is on the

injured list and, wrote a SF columnist, “Once their

pitching legend returns, Giants’ fans can only hope

he can buck the aging process, if just for a while, and

finish the season more gracefully than he started.”

Until next time …
