YOU GOTTA LOVE IT

“O, CANADA … OUR HOME AND NATIVE

LAND … TRUE PATRIOT LOVE … IN ALL OF

US COMMAND … WITH GLOWING HEART,

WE SEE THEE RISE, THE NEW NORTH BOLD

AND FREE … FROM FAR AND WIDE …..”

“No matter how many times you hear it … that is

awesome … 18,000-plus singing in unison,” said the

NHL-on-ESPN’s Sean McDonough Tuesday night

after the sell-out crowd in Edmonton gave a stirring,

impromptu rendition of the Canadian National

Anthem prior to Game 4 of the Oilers’ playoff game

with Dallas.

“….. O, CANADA … WE STAND ON GUARD FOR

THEE … O, CANADA, WE STAND ON

GUARD … FOR … THEEEEE!!”

JONES LEADS AHL ROCHESTER IN SCORING AS A DEFENSEMAN

Maybe the woeful Buffalo Sabres are doing  ZAC JONES   a favor after all. While the Sabres remain likely to run their NHL record  for futility to 15 straight playoff-less seasons, Jones is  leading their top farm team in scoring as a defenseman,  for crying out loud. In 18 games with the AHL Rochester (N.Y.) Americans,  prior to Friday night’s 6-3 victory at Charlotte, N.C., the  5-11, 190 pounder from Richmond had 20 points  including 19 assists and one (game-winning) goal. Jones  ranked 14 th  in league scoring overall, the only d-man  among the top 34. What’s more, you’ve got to believe the New York  Rangers, who signed him originally (as a third round draft  choice) six years ago, could use Jones now, especially on  the power play, with the loss of 2022 Norris Trophy  recipient  ADAM FOX  to what has been reported as a  lengthy injury. Jones unquestionably is at his best with the puck on...

ATLANTA PAPER WILL 'STOP THE PRESSES' BY END OF YEAR

Lots of stuff … starting with non-sports-but-important-sports-related news … In case you missed it, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, at one time the South’s best (by far) newspaper, will no longer be available in print, effective year’s end. It will become strictly an on-line operation because that’s where people prefer getting their news, weather, sports, etc., management said. QUESTION: Can the Richmond Times-Dispatch be far  behind?                                  * * * * * * * * So St. Christopher’s offensive lineman  DARIUS GRAY ,  the last of the five-star recruits to commit, chose South  Carolina over LSU … with Clemson, Ohio State and  Tennessee also-rans among his final five. How much are  the Gamecocks of  SHANE BEAMER paying him? That  should be the first question … especially after he said he  liked Beamer so much, and USC Nation treated ...

LOTS OF STUFF. ... LIKE ACC AS WELL AS U.VA. SHOULD SAVE QB FROM NO-LONGER-RELEVANT NCAA

Here, there, and just about everywhere ... So Virginia QB  CHANDLER MORRIS  was denied a  seventh year of eligibility. He should take the NCAA to  court over the decision … which makes no sense given  the body’s arbitrary, subjective approach that has resulted  in some athletes getting favorable response despite asking  for as many as 10 years (and more) to complete their  college “careers.” Besides, the NCAA no longer is the guardian of amateur  sports because, frankly, they no longer exist … and surely  is about to go out of business, hopefully sooner than later.  College athletics (notably football and basketball), where  everyone is a free agent and operating with no salary cap,  have become more professional than the pros. A product of the transfer portal … who proved a perfect  fit for U.Va., off as well as on the field … Morris deserves  better, and the ACC as well as the school should cha llenge th...
