ALL IS WELL WITH THE ACC ... WHO'S KIDDING WHOM?
By the way … did you know that …
… “the Atlantic Coast Conference is entering a period of
stability” …?? … which was the lead on a piece by the
Associated Press following the recent ACC spring
meeting. Stability? Really? … when (for one of many
things) the rich – Clemson and Florida State – became
richer, thanks to a settlement of their law suits against the
conference … that changes revenue distribution to benefit
schools with “marquee football brands” … like Clemson
and FSU … “The revised deal should fortify a league that
looked to be on the verge of collapse,” the AP said. Yeah,
right! It is all about TV ratings, the more people who
watch your games the more money you will get … which
will enable the Tigers and Seminoles to move even
further ahead of the Wake Forests and, yes, Virginias,
even Virginia Techs … and eventually will lead to a
breakup of a once-great association of area schools that
went coast-to-coast and got too big … because of poor
leadership combined with a lack of basic vision ... trying
to keep up with Big 10 and SEC, both of which had long-
since given up any pretense of caring about anything but
the bottom line.
… Richmond’s ZAC JONES remains one of 10 New York
Rangers unsigned for 2025-26? A restricted free agent,
the left-handed defenseman should know something soon
… “He will be a name to watch in off-season trade
chatter,” according to the New York Times.
… while Virginia’s BRIAN O’CONNOR apparently is
the front runner to become next baseball coach at
Mississippi State, not everyone in Starkville thinks it
would be a good idea because?… “There have been some
red flags this year,” said JASON SPOR, one of the
proprietors of State-sponsored “Locked In” podcast …
without saying what those red flags were .… Besides, he
admittedly wants Oregon coach MARK
WASIKOWSKI.
… the College Football Hall of Fame lowered one of three
minimum requirements to make the late MIKE LEACH
eligible? … from a 60 percent winning percentage to
59.5. Leach (Texas Tech, Washington State, Mississippi
State) won 59.6. In explaining why the change was
necessary, the hall said something about not wanting to
exclude anyone whose “contributions to the game
extended beyond a narrow statistical threshold.” OK, so
why have requirements, that also include minimums of 10
years and 100 games in the first place?
… the NCAA would like to expand March Madness to 76
teams? … from the current 68 that has been in effect
since 2011 … when it jumped from the original 64 set in
1985. Wonderful! Most coaches are in favor, naturally …
because it means more can say they made the field which
has become a major measuring stick for a coach’s value
and worthiness to make more money (than reasonable).
… another reason to like watching NCAA softball is …
you get to see a real rarity … the occasional left-handed-
throwing catcher?
Until next time ...
