A LITTLE BIT ON A LOT OF STUFF
Journalism, 7/2 favorite to win the May 3 Kentucky
Derby (and finished second by 1 ½ lengths to
Sovereignty), is the 8/5 morning line choice to
claim the 150th Preakness Stakes (Gr. 1) tomorrow
… With Sovereignty by-passing the second leg of
the Triple Crown, the nine-horse field will have only
three that ran in the Derby including Sandman
(second choice at 4/1) and American Promise
(15/1), winner of the March 15 Virginia Derby at
Colonial Downs. NIK JUAREZ will remain jockey
for American Promise, trained by D. WAYNE
LUCAS, 89 … despite finishing 16th among 19
starters in the Kentucky Derby … Among the other 3
year old Thoroughbreds is BOB BAFFERT-trained,
unbeaten (2-0) Goal Oriented (6/1) … This will be
the last race held at ancient Pimlico Race Course in
Baltimore. Next year’s Preakness will be at near-by
Laurel while Pimlico undergoes a massive makeover
and renovation.
Might as well go on record now (before the blocking
and tackling begins, and chances are I would change
my fickle, octogenarian mind) … Your
2025 Washington Commanders will not – repeat: NO
WAY – match last year’s win total of 12 games …
when NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year JAYDEN
DANIELS led The Team Formerly Known as
Redskins to five victories on the last play from
scrimmage … like the Hail Mary to beat Chicago
when two Bears defended TERRY McLAURIN,
leaving NOAH BROWN wide open to grab a
deflected pass in the end zone … It would be unfair
(not to mention crazy) to think Daniels has it in him
again … and there is some question whether the
Commanders have improved, especially on defense,
as much as some of their East rivals such as the
Cowboys and New York Football Giants … And the
Eagles are favored to make it back-to-back Super
Bowls … Also, don’t forget Washington’s schedule,
which is reflective of the Commanders becoming a
darling of TV, thanks primarily to Daniels. They
have five prime-time games among eight televised
nationally. In addition, they are being sent to Madrid,
as in Spain, Nov. 16 to face the Dolphins … and they
are faced with three sets of back-to-back road games
plus two on Thursday night. Two of their last three
regular-season games are against the Eagles … Oh,
did we mention they don’t have back to back home
games any time? If you didn’t know better, you
might think the little old schedule maker thinks the
infamous DAN SNYDER is still franchise owner.
So, what do you think … should the Greatest Singles
Hitter of All Time, who died last year, be put in
baseball’s Hall of fame now that he got a reprieve,
thanks to President Trump by way of Commissioner
Manfred? … Actually, his death should have been
enough to make PETE ROSE automatically eligible
again. It was, after all, “only” a lifetime ban for
betting on games he played and managed, a no-no
back in the day but hardly a horrible offense in this
day of legalized gambling just about everywhere …
Ask around, and you won’t find many people (cliché
alert) sitting on a fence when it comes to Rose.
Either you feel strongly he should be voted in or you
don’t, with equal passion … One thing is for sure …
I don’t buy the argument that says … by voting for
him means you forgive all the bad and stupid stuff
Rose, the quintessential jerk, did. One has nothing to
do with the other. Besides, you can only imagine
how many currently enshrined in Cooperstown, N.Y.,
would/should be disqualified for being Rose-like off
the field, too. A mass exodus, perhaps.
We recall pro rassler The Miz (MICHAEL
MIZANIN) saying it was a lot more fun to be a heel
than a babyface, which helps to explain why 20-year
veteran JOHN CENAmade the turn from good guy
to bad on his farewell tour ... So maybe, just maybe,
that’s why DENNY HAMLIN seems to embrace
new-found criticism that has led the Manchester high
school alumnus being called NASCAR’s “Biggest
Villian.”
Until next time ...
