USL LEAGUE ONE ASKING FOR TROUBLE

Very Briefly Told (at least that’s the plan) …

USL League One had better crack down … before

it’s too late … and someone not regulated by the

third tier soccer circuit takes serious objection. In

Saturday night’s match at City Stadium, Westchester

FC’s JUAN CARLOS OBREGON could have

sparked some nasty retaliation after scoring a goal

then rushing local fans (Red Army) and responding

with a gross gesture.

What a game … Your Kickers managed a point in

the standings when JOSH KIRKLAND’s goal 90

plus nine into stoppage salvaged a 4-4 tie that

seemed almost impossible a few minutes earlier

when Obregon converted a penalty kick … that led

to the Honduras national team’s 30 year old acting

like a fool.

After seven games Kickers are 3-1-3 for 10 points …

tied for third with Knoxville, four points behind first-

place Naples FC.

From Richmond (Deep Run High School), the 6-1,

185-pound Kirkland came on in the 58th minute …

and scored his first of two goals six minutes later.

They were his first as a professional after a standout

career at Mary Washington … where, as a senior

(2022), he had 18 goals including a school-record

four against Guilford.

About time … the NHL Rangers fired coach PETER

“The Genius” LAVIOLETTE Saturday. What took

them so long?

Figures … Leading candidate to become fourth

coach in five years CHRIS DRURY has been NY

general manager is … MIKE SULLIVAN, who still

has two years remaining on Penguins’ contract.

Oh, no … not Torts again. Also listed under

consideration by the Rangers, said to be as many as

eight, is JOHN TORTORELLA, who has worn out

his welcome at several stops including MSG and,

most recently, Philadelphia.

In case you missed it … New Jersey goaltender

JACOB MARKSTROM, trailing 3-1 midway of

the final period in Game 1 best-of-seven in Raleigh,

N.C., lined up Hurricanes’ANDREI

SVECHNIKOV, standing in front of the Devils’

goal, back to him. But, just as Markstrom wound up

his big goalie stick, along came teammate CODY

GLASS, between the intended target and Markstrom

... and took the lumber, intended for Svechnikov, in

the mid-section. Down went Glass, joining NJ’s

LUKE HUGHES … who likewise was injured

before the next whistle. Hughes returned to the

game, Glass did not.

No sooner did ESPN show graphic – ALEX

OVECHKIN playoff career ... 45th overtime game

(0 GWG) – than Great 8 stepped onto the ice for his

second shift in sudden-death Monday night in Game

1 of the Capitals’ first-round matchup with Montreal

and … you guessed it.

Washington won a faceoff in the Canadiens’ end.

Ovechkin immediately went to the front of the net.

ANTHONY BEAUVILLIER shot wide but the

puck bounced back to the forward obtained from

Pittsburgh at the trading deadline in early March.

Ovechkin tapped his stick on the ice and, from the

left corner, Beuvillier delivered a perfect pass that

the 39 year old left winger tipped in mid-air by

goaltender SAM MONTEMBEAULT. Let the

celebration begin.

Until next time ...
