ANOTHER REMINDER ... HOW MUCH WE MISS "SONNY, SAM AND FRANK"
Embarrassing? No. Really bad? Yes. It was amateur
night in Dixie Sunday when your Washington
Football Team did it again … winning on the last
snap for the fifth time … on a 37-yard field goal…
And radio Voice of the Commanders BRAM
WEINSTEIN went off the rails, screaming
something he apparently had written for such an
occasion … “IT’S … GOOD!! THE CARDIAC
COMMANDERS ARE THE CLUTCH
COMMANDERS. THEY DO IT AGAIN!!! …
WE’LL SEE YOU IN DETROIT …”
Hey, the 51 year old native of Silver Spring, Md., and
American University graduate (broadcast journalism,
Class of ‘95) is expected to get carried away.
Weinstein is a homer, after all … a malady that has
infected the profession, which doesn’t make him
unique … No, making a fool out of yourself with
some over-the-top cheerleading goes with the
territory … Where Weinstein blew it was … during
his albeit limited description of the walk-off kick he
failed to mention the ball hit the right upright (close
to dead-center, mind you) and took a left when it
could just as easily had gone right. Check the game
officials stationed by the goal posts, entrusted with
giving the final call. Apparently they had some
difficulty believing what they had just seen … before
raising their arms in the air signifying it was …
GOOD!! … Meanwhile, Weinstein was losing it …
as was analyst LONDON FLETCHER, who could
be seen pumping 12 rights (count ‘em) before
shouting something or other Together they generated
lots of response in chat rooms, etc., some of it
favorable (believe it or not) but mostly not.
Naturally, there were comments how much they
missed “SONNY [Jurgensen], SAM [Huff] and
FRANK [Herzog],” who, by the way, last worked
together in 2004. This was Weinstein’s fifth year
calling Washington games, and some listeners
recommended there not be a sixth.
Until next time ...
