COLANDREA WOULD BE PERFECT FIT FOR ... RICHMOND?
Of goings and comings ...
Former UVA starter ANTHONY COLANDREA is
among more than 130 FBS quarterbacks to opt for the
transfer portal, seeking fame and fortune (not necessarily
in that order) … It says here the 6-0, 190 pounder
would be a perfect fit for ….. the U of Richmond, which
relies on a quarterback’s running as well as passing
ability in equal doses … Colandrea, who has one year of
eligibility remaining, reportedly has visits scheduled with
Pitt and Syracuse of the ACC and Ole Miss.
Duke continued to be a destination for big-time retread
signal callers … when Tulane’s DARIAN MENSAH
signed on to replace MAALIK MURPHY, who came to
Durham, N.C., from the University of Texas and led the
Blue Devils to a 9-3 record … that included a 28-27 loss
in overtime to nationally-ranked SMU … A sturdy 6-5,
225, with two years of eligibility left, Murphy set a
school record with 26 TD passes. He originally chose
Texas over Oregon, Alabama and Southern Cal … Only
time we saw Mensah, who has three years of eligibility
left, was in the AAC title game in which he was badly
outplayed and upstaged by Army’s “Captain America,”
BRYSON DAILY.
Speaking of loyalty … BILL BELICHICK is
bringinlong-time friend and (presumably) confidante
MICHAEL LOMBARDI with him to North Carolina as
general manager … a comparatively-new, but apparently
vital, addition to already-over-crowded college football
staffs
…An alumnus of Hofstra, where he was a down lineman
and long snapper, Lombardi, 65, has worked for th49er
Browns, Raiders, Eagles and Patriots, in personnel
primarily. In his first NFL job as scout for San Francisco
under hall-of-fame coach BILL WALSH, Lombardi (no
relation to Vince) was credited with “discovering” James
Madison University linebacker CHARLES HALEY,
taken by the 49ers in the 1966 draft. Lombardi twice
worked for Belichick – Browns and Patriots – before
joining the Fifth Estate as a writer and TV commentator …
He was employed by the VSIN betting network when
Belichick hired him … again.
Belichick signed a five-year contract at $10 million per,
making him the highest paid North Carolina state employe,
all-time … He also can make $3.5 annually in perks …
such as $300,000 for winning the conference and $750,000
for making the college football playoff … not winning just
making it … The school will increase its NIL warchest
from $4 million to $20 million … Given the fact that only
the first three years are guaranteed, Belichick was asked
about the possibility of resigning after a year or two. (NFL
Washington OC KLIFF KINGSBURY told reporters he
would believe Belichick was going to coach at Carolina
only when he saw the 72 year old icon on the sidelines.) “I
didn’t come to leave,” Belichick said.
So, why did he decide to coach in college for the first time?
Well, for one thing, it’s been reported he soured on the
NFL because no team, other than the Falcons, showed
interest in enrolling an eight-time winner of the Super
Bowl. (Atlanta interviewed Belichick at least twice before
hiring RAHEEM MORRIS.) … Another possible reason
that hasn’t been mention but plausible, nevertheless … is
that Belichick and 24 year old girl friend JORDAN
HUDSON have grown tired over having their every move
covered by big-city media and figure, by comparison, they
will be pretty much left alone in smaller, student-oriented
Chapel Hill.
Until next time ...
