ROUGH GAME FOR TYREE, COLANDREA ... AND GARRETT AT NOTRE DAME
Briefly told:
Now we know another reason why NBC’s JASON
GARRETT no longer is employed as a football coach.
Trailing by 7-0, thanks to an opening-kickoff muff by
transfer CHRIS TYREE … but having forced a punt on
Notre Dame’s second possession ... Virginia went for it on
fourth-and-two from its 46 yard line … and Garrett,
whose last sideline gig was in Dallas with the NFL
Cowboys, said, “I like it.” Say what? So ANTHONY
COLANDREA’S pass is deflected then batted down …
A three-touchdown favorite playing at home, the eighth-
ranked Fighting Irish failed to take advantage … but still
prevailed 35-14 after turning four Cavalier mistakes into
first-half touchdowns … To think MARCUS
FREEMAN, in his third full season as coach in the
shadow of Touchdown Jesus, said before the game he was
concerned about U.Va., citing “its confidence.” … Then
Tyree, who spent his first four years at Notre Dame,
fanned on the short (by design?) kickoff, the ball striking
his right leg … straight to FRANK CARLIN who
cruised for an apparent TD that was nullified because,
according to NBC’s DAN HICKS, by rule you cannot
advance a fumble. With four seconds gone, the Irish had
possession on the Cavalier 25, and 1:52 later
JEREMIYAH LOVE built his streak of scoring a
running touchdown to 10 straight games … one shy of the
school record … Hey, it could have been a lot worse.
Notre Dame had touchdowns of 78 and 73 yards called
back. The latter was the result of a variation of the old
chestnut Bumerooski, which the game officials apparently
had never seen (or heard of) because they blew the call …
It was 28-0 at halftime, and by then Colandrea had blown
whatever chance he had of becoming the next Notre
Dame quarterback via the transfer portal. The last two
Irish signal callers came from Wake Forest and Duke …
so the auditions are ongoing by implication as much as
anything else.
……. Can anyone explain the alleged popularity of PAT
McAFEE… who talks a lot and says virtually nothing on
ESPN’s College GameDay? Talk about the mouth that
bored! … McAfee’s got his own daily show? Surely you
jest! … Speaking of which … Indiana has rewarded first-
year coach CURT CIGNETTI with an eight-year
contract extension worth $72 million. Only Georgia
warden … sorry, coach KIRBY SMART ($11 million
annually) and Clemson’s DABO SWINNEY ($9.5M) are
said to make more than the former James Madison
University coach’s $9M … Unbeaten IU has 10 victories
for the first time. Idle this week, the sixth-ranked
Hoosiers play Ohio State for the Big 17 championship
next Saturday (Noon, Fox).
Talk about a fool and his money … Anyone who thought
JAKE PAUL, 27, vs. MIKE TYSON, 58, would be a
real fight -- and paid to watch Friday night -- got what he
deserved … which was a whole lot of nothing …
Predictably, Tyson was huffing and puffing after one
round, leaving Paul with a choice: either end it quickly or
carry the old man to a decision. He chose the latter, much
to the chagrin of people who hoped to see Tyson knocked
out … It was the ultimate con between two con men who
left the home of the Dallas Cowboys laughing … not to
mention considerably richer: Paul $40 million and Tyson
$20M … allegedly, that is … What a mess! Making it
even worse – if that was possible – was the breakdown of
Netflix streaming service which enraged a reported 60
million viewers … Actually, they should consider
themselves lucky for missing most of it.
Quickie quiz: Who went into Saturday night’s games
leading the National Hockey League in 5-on-5 goals
scored? Was it Edmonton’s LEON DRAISAITL? Or
NIKITA KUCHEROV of Tampa Bay? How about
Toronto’s AUSTEN MATTHEWS? … Would you
believe Washington’s CONNOR McMICHAEL with
11? The Caps’ top draft choice in 2019 (25th overall), he
signed a two-year contract extension worth $2.1 million
annually on July 1 … SPENCER CARBERY, 43, is
early leader in the clubhouse for NHL coach of the year.
He has Capitols playing upscale, crowd-pleasing,
WINNING hockey with a bunch of no-name players plus
the Great 8, ALEX OVECHKIN, and enforcer TOM
WILSON, who has become even more effective with his
gloves on.
........ “Inside the NBA,” TNT’s popular studio show, will
shift to ESPN and ABC, starting next year … Richmond’s
ZAC JONES, a defenseman for the New York Rangers,
scored his first goal of the season Sunday in a 2-0 victory
over the Seattle Kracken to start a five-game road trip.
Veteran goalie JONATHAN QUICK had his second
straight shutout, stopping 24 shots.
Until next time ...
