SCARLET KNIGHTS TRIED TO LOSE BUT HOKIES WOULDN'T LET THEM

 Weekend Watch:

Well … Rutgers certainly tried … to lose to Virginia Tech

Saturday (Sept. 21). The Scarlet Knights missed two field

goals, fumbled the ball away inside the Hokie five yard line

and … leading 23-7, coach GREG SCHIANO opted for a

pass on fourth down from the Tech one … that fell

incomplete … The final was 26-23 when Rutgers (3-0)

turned a screen pass into a 63-yard gain leading to a 24-yard

FG that was good with 1:56 to go … then intercepted a pass

to assure Tech’s 12th straight loss to a non-conference

Power 4 team and Notre Dame. The Hokies (2-2) now have

been beaten by a team picked to finish last in the SEC

(Vanderbilt) and the team picked to finish ninth in the Big 10

… which leads to a question: Who would you rather not be

today, Carolina coach MAC BROWN, a 70-50 loser to

James Madison, or Tech’s BRENT PRY? … “We made

some changes … We will have to look at it some more,” Pry

told reporters.

YOU WANT unrest by the faithful? … Off to a terrible 0-3

start, Florida State – preseason No. 10 – finally won … 13-9

over ACC newcomer California in Tallahasee … where they

loved seven sacks by the Seminoles’ defense but hated

another sub-par performance by the offense … most notably

transfer QB DJ UIAGALELEI, who was 16 of 27 for 177

yards throwing the football … as FSU scored only twice on

11 possessions.

SOMETIMES YOU can’t believe your lying eyes … like

Saturday night in Boulder, Colo., where DEION

SANDERS’ Colorado Buffalos won in overtime … but

never should have had the opportunity … Get this: Trailing

by seven points with :02 remaining in regulation, Colorado

was on the Baylor 43 … and everyone, it seems but Baylor,

knew a Hail Mary was the call … the only call.

So what did the Bears do? They put only two defensive

backs deep… and ran man for man with Colorado receiver

LAJOHNTAY WESTER ... who caught the ball when the

defender got turned around and apparently tripped over the

flag … The network never bothered to show us why the two

Baylor players already in the end zone were otherwise

occupied and arrived too late to help … That the Buffalos

won when Baylor’s DOMINIC RICHARDSON, diving for

what would have been a game-tying TD (at worst) on the

Bears’ first possession, fumbled the ball through and out of

the end zone … without breaking the plain was anti-

climactic … and meant to be.

HOW ABOUT THAT? … Sanders to replace MIKE

NORVELL at alma mater Florida State? That’s the rumor. It

says here: No way. The Seminoles are smarter than that.

They are … aren’t they?

NBC HAS DECIDED to give CRIS COLLINSWORTH a

new contract … ignoring critics who think he’s been

intimidated by players and no longer is willing to get on

them … when necessary, The former Bengals receiver is

expected to be analyst on Sunday night games well into the

2030’s … The news surely wasn’t welcomed by a long-time

media watcher in New York … who insists Collinsworth, as

well as baseball’s JOHN SMOLTZ (Fox), talk too much,

thereby ruining the coverage.

Until next time ...
