……. Speaking of four-wheeled competition … it appears the 

four-legged version has its share of you've got to be kidding 

me rules, too. Bet you didn’t know it’s an offense punishable 

by fine and suspension … when a jockey uses his crop more 

than six times in one race? It’s true … After urging

 THORPEDO ANNA with – say it isn’t so – seven to an 

oh-so-close second in the Gr. I Travers Stakes Sunday, rider

 BRIAN HERNANDEZ, JR., was fined $1,250 and told to 

take a day off for his indiscretion.


By the way … horse racing is among the last – perhaps only 

– sport where males compete against females, and no one 

gets upset about it … that is, of course, as long as a large 

wager doesn’t go south … The only girl running against the 

boys at Saratoga, Thorpedo Anna lost by a head to favored

 FIERCENESS.


……. Manchester United’s revolving door keeps turning … 

latest addition (fifth in all since 2023) is MANUEL 

UGARTE by way of Paris St. Germaine for about $52 

million … a real steal if the 23 year old midfielder can 

overcome a poor season with PSG. Ugarte’s strength is said 

to be taking the ball from opponents … umm, OK! … Red 

Devils are off to a shaky start, edging Fulham 1-0 before 

dropping a 2-1 decision to Brighton. Liverpool is next.

DESPITE FLAK ... WHO ELSE IS BETTER COACH?

  I have come to the conclusion that Virginia, the state of, lives in an alternate universe when it comes to college athletics. Where else would they celebrate a basketball coach who makes $1.7 million annually… yet has been to three NCAA tournaments in … 19 years?   Or, would they hire an Ivy League coach with a losing record  … who relies on three-point field goals (33, making 12, in a  three-point NIT loss at Ohio State) … which is like watching  the NBA … which, frankly, would never be described as an  endorsement here? And, they have the nerve to say, “We are  committed to athletic excellence.” THEN THERE  is the man in charge of the DI program in  Charlottesville … where he has built a winner unlike any other  … based on defense … not just rolling the ball out on the floor  and allowing the players to create one-on-one offense on their  own.  TONY BENNETT  is a coach who … are you ready for  this? … actually coaches. THOUGHTS WHILE THINKING

Big-time college football has become more professional than the NFL. Think about it: With few  exceptions, ALL players are free agents … and can go to the highest bidder … with no salary cap  impeding deep-pocket alumni and other … uh, friends of the university from signing whoever they  want. Louisville of your ACC landed 25 newcomers via the transfer portal this year. I dare say no  NFL team signed as many free agents … not even close. ….  I know, I know … Deion Sanders brought in what had to be a record-number of new faces to  Colorado including Shedeur Sanders, the quarterback, who threw for 510 yards in the father-son  debut, a 45-42 victory over 21-point-favorite TCU. Pretty impressive, right?
