KEATTS OWES BENNETT BIG-TIME

 At the very least, North Carolina State basketball coach KEVIN KEATTS should share his annual bonus of $400,000 for winning the ACC tournament with … Virginia’s TONY BENNETT who (admittedly) mismanaged the final moments of regulation in the teams’ semifinal. As a result, the Wolfpack forced overtime on a three-pointer at the buzzer then claimed a 73-65 decision, followed by a final victory over favored North Carolina to make the NCAA field as an 11th seed … followed by back to back victories over No. 6 Texas Tech then upstart Oakland, which ousted Kentucky ... Maybe a hearty, sincere "thank you" should forthcoming as well … for the Cavaliers saved Keatts’ job, too. At least State didn’t make the same embarrassing mistake that Long Beach State did … telling coach DAN MONSON he was fired before the The Beach won the Big West Conference tournament.

media what it wanted this week when asked about the transfer 

portal, which allows NCAA athletes to jump schools almost at

Should we take LSU coach BRIAN KELLY seriously when he 

said at Heisman Trophy-winning QB JAYDEN DANIELS’ 

workout for NFL teams … “He’ll get the ball out to the 

receivers and make plays … for Washington.”? … In other 

words, Kelly knows (?) your Commanders, with the No. 2 

selection in next month’s draft, are committed to Daniels. That 

was before a report circulated Thursday that he might have 

some problem with his right arm … after a photo, taken at the 

2023 game with Alabama, showed Daniels with a large bulge 

near the elbow of his throwing hand. He wore a long-sleeve 

sweat shirt for his Pro Day session … According to a doctor 

who knows about such things, there is nothing to worry about 

… Meanwhile, the New York Football Giants, with the No. 6 

pick, were said to be very impressed by Daniels’ workout in 

Baton Rouge and could make the Team Formerly Known as 

Redskins an offer to move up … New England, which had nine 

people on hand to evaluate – and interview – Daniels, is 

scheduled to draft third … and is all but certain to go for a QB 

… Da Bears are expected to take Southern Cal’s CALEB 

WILLIAMS No. 1 in quarterback-rich draft that includes 

Daniels, DRAKE MAYE (North Carolina), MICHEL PENIX 

JR. (U. of Washington), J.J. McCARTHY (MICHIGAN) … 

and our favorite, Oregon’s BO NIX.

HOW DOES ARRUZA DO IT, KEEP SO MANY PLAYERS HAPPY EVEN IF THEY DON'T PLAY?

  No, we haven’t forgotten our promise to expand on what football has become at Randolph-Macon College since  PEDRO ARRUZA  was named coach 21 years ago … how he built his program with literally hundreds of players who have played little, if at all, yet became better for the experience. Spiking our interest was attending a game in Ashland for   first time in many, many years … and watching players  leave the locker room and run onto the field in a  seemingly  never-ending wave. While the Yellow Jackets,  not unlike  most teams, probably don’t use more than 50  or so on a  regular basis, there were upwards of 140  athletes decked out  in the latest gear. The  official game program had 153 names, for crying out  loud. ARENA RETURNS ... SO WILL ELLIOTT ... MAYBE

  Before we get to Virginia (university of) football … a  word about former U.Va., futbol’s (as in soccer)  BRUCE  ARENA … The World’s Greatest Soccer Coach,  suspended then  almost as quickly reinstated by MLS a year ago, is back  … hired by the 6-25-3 San Jose Earthquakes.
