The REALLY BIG NEWS coming out of the New York Rangers’ training camp, which opened Thursday (Sept. 21), was that new coach Peter Laviolette had messed some with his defense … although he insisted it probably would be temporary. Adam Fox was paired with K’Andre Miller while captain Jacob Trouba lined up with Ryan Lindgren. For the past three seasons Fox and Lindgren formed the No. 1 unit, with Trouba-Miller No. 2. “It’s good to change things up now and then,” Laviolette was quoted as saying. Some things never change. Richmond’s Zac Jones was not among the top six. Free agent signee Erik Gustafsson, who played for Laviolette last year in Washington, was paired with Braden Schneider on the No. 3 defense – at least for starters. Big-time college football has become more professional than the NFL. VRC PLEASED ... WHICH EXPLAINS RUBBER-STAMP MEETING

  Oh, for the good, old days when every meeting of the Virginia Racing Commission was guaranteed to have plenty of fireworks, thanks to a cast of characters who didn’t mind going off script and expressing opinions that were sure to bring instant rebuttal. Wednesday, at the VRC’s fall meeting, we were reminded of that time  not all that long ago … when VRC chairman  Robin Williams  didn’t  like  Jeff Jacobs , absentee owner of Colonial Downs – and the feeling  was mutual … when  Frank Petramalo , representing the horsemen,  would engage Jacobs’ lawyer  Jim Weinberg  with fiery exchanges that  would rock the place … when  Tad Berman  could be counted on to  make the public comment portion lively, to say the least … etc., etc.,  etc. By comparison the latest gathering of the state’s equine intelligensa  was a snooze fest. WE'VE BEEN SAYING  for a while now that NASCAR will pull one of Richmond’s two Cup races and move the event elsewhere (to be determined). The signs have been unmistakable. First, Dennis Bickmeier , the speedway’s man in charge since 2011, unexpectedly resigned to become executive director of Henrico County’s sports and entertainment authority – which, among other things, plans to build a 17,000-seat indoor facility that ostensibly will be a much-needed replacement for the Richmond Coliseum (R.I.P.) by 2026. He knew what was coming and got out while he could … on his own terms … and not become the designated fall guy (sorry, person) in the face of declining interest.
