BUDDY COUSINS: I'LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT

In an article in today’s RTD, about Todd ‘Parney’ Parnell’s departure from the Flying Squirrels, here was a comment by the owner, Lou DiBella, that should have caught the attention of every Squirrels fan. “DiBella said he remains UNDER THE IMPRESSION that a new ballpark will be built by the city…” He should have said that there WILL BE a new ballpark. NOT! That he’s under the impression that one will. I’ve said it on a sports talk show, and I’m saying it here. Until I see the Squirrels take the field in a new ballpark I AIN’T BUYING IT! There’s nothing in writing. Some people with the RVA economics department have said they want a ballpark. Big deal. I want to hit the lottery. The odds of my hitting the lottery and a new ballpark for the Squirrels are about the same. RVA LIED about the deal with the then-Washington Redskins, and again about their plan for a ballpark in Shockoe Bottom. With nothing in writing, my point of view is looking good now. I don’t believe RVA has selected an architect yet, which speaks volumes.

HOW DOES ARRUZA DO IT, KEEP SO MANY PLAYERS HAPPY EVEN IF THEY DON'T PLAY?

  No, we haven’t forgotten our promise to expand on what football has become at Randolph-Macon College since  PEDRO ARRUZA  was named coach 21 years ago … how he built his program with literally hundreds of players who have played little, if at all, yet became better for the experience. Spiking our interest was attending a game in Ashland for   first time in many, many years … and watching players  leave the locker room and run onto the field in a  seemingly  never-ending wave. While the Yellow Jackets,  not unlike  most teams, probably don’t use more than 50  or so on a  regular basis, there were upwards of 140  athletes decked out  in the latest gear. ARENA RETURNS ... SO WILL ELLIOTT ... MAYBE

  Before we get to Virginia (university of) football … a  word about former U.Va., futbol’s (as in soccer)  BRUCE  ARENA … The World’s Greatest Soccer Coach,  suspended then  almost as quickly reinstated by MLS a year ago, is back  … hired by the 6-25-3 San Jose Earthquakes. The official  announcement came Thursday … after Arena, 73, told  someone at ESPN earlier in the week … While he was at  it, this country’s most successful (as well as controversial)  coach of the game that is No. 1 in the world, attempted to  provide some clarity about what happened with the MLS  New England Revolution that led to his suspension and  (eventually) resignation … To paraphrase, it had  something to do with remarks made “while the staff was  kidding around.” He took full responsibility, Arena said.  Time to move on. -------   If anyone,  THOM BRENNAMAN  knows  conflict when he sees it.
